South Lodge Primary School was named School of the Year for its inclusiveness and passionate team.

The school at Invergordon won the Highland Heroes award because of its dedicated staff, including headmaster David Hayes-MacLeod.

Mr. Hayes-MacLeod equipped it with benches and equipment for children with reduced mobility and provided a safe space for children struggling with daily activities.

An Education Scotland inspection in 2019 also praised the school’s efforts to go the extra mile for families.

Mr Hayes-MacLeod, who has been principal there since 2016, described the school as welcoming and it is clear he is dedicated to its success.

“I’m kind of on cloud nine,” he said after receiving the award. “It’s not usual for me to be at a loss for words, but I really was last night.

“I didn’t expect it at all, we were also up against some great other nominees. Everyone in the Highlands is a hero after the last two years that we’ve all had to go through.

“I am just thrilled. This is an award that will mean so much not just to me but to the whole school community – the children, the staff, the parents.”

South Lodge is at the heart of the community and David said parents shouted congratulations as they dropped their children off Friday morning.

He organized a special assembly to show the children photos and videos of the awards ceremony and show them the trophy.

“It’s a party for the whole school,” he continued.

“I’m over the moon. It really shows how much I feel for the school, how much I love it and how much it has grown over the past few years.

“I would say South Lodge is like a collective heart. Every person in the school – it doesn’t matter if they’re the housekeeper, the cook, the teachers – everyone has a genuine love for their job here.

“We rely heavily on the education of our children, so we provide a lot of support. I know it is greatly appreciated by the whole community what we do here at South Lodge.

“I think the collective heart, love and passion that we all have, regardless of our status at school, makes us so special. Everyone is here for the love of the job and to make a difference. in children’s lives.
