ROSS Sutherland caused a huge upset by beating defending champions Highland 2nd XV with a 20-19 win at Caledonia North Two.
The Stags came from 12-5 behind at half-time to secure a one-point win at Invergordon for their second victory of the campaign.
They inflicted the first defeat on the champions Highland 2nd, who are ineligible for promotion to Caledonia One due to the reserve teams’ inability to progress from Caledonia North Two.
The win moved Ross Sutherland to sixth place in Caledonia North Two after three games, including two wins.
They are nine points and 11 behind league leaders Moray, whom they face in Elgin on Saturday, but who have two games in hand.
Club spokesman David Gill said it was a fantastic victory against a Highland side who have dominated the division in recent seasons.
He says a win against high-caliber opposition bodes well for the season ahead.
“First of all it was good to get a win, but it was good to get the win by scoring tries,” Gill said.
“The games against Highland are usually quite intense and we always look forward to it.
“Over the last few seasons we have received results that we didn’t want against them.
“So getting this win will be a real confidence booster for the young and inexperienced squad we have this season.
“This season is a fresh start for us, so for those guys to experience a win over Highland was awesome.”
Gill says his side are now looking for their first road win against a Moray side who are flying high with confidence after a great start to the campaign that sees them in pole position in the title chase.
“Moray is really flying right now and has already put up some big scores,” Gill said.
“But the win over Highland will hopefully bring more bodies into training and challenge the players to earn places in regards to squad selection for Saturday.
“Beating Highland will only be worth it if we can follow it up in the next few weeks with more results.
“It’s Saturday and making the most of it, which will be a difficult task.
“We need a full performance against Moray because it’s a big task.”
