THE headmaster of an award-winning primary school in Easter Ross has spoken of the opportunities the children he now teaches will have with the thriving renewable energy industry on their doorstep.

David Hayes-Macleod, who remembers the “buzz” in his hometown of Invergordon during the oil boom years, spoke of his excitement to see the renewable energy sector “really taking off” now.

Mr Hayes-Macleod, who was a pupil at South Lodge Primary, explained how he decided to return to the toen after a stint in London when an opportunity at his former school touched his heart.

South Lodge was one of the primary schools to win the recent Highland Heroes Awards organized by our parent company, Highland News and Media.

Mr Hayes-Macleod is featured in a video produced by Opportunity Cromarty Firth, the consortium behind a bid to win so-called green freeport status from the Scottish and Westminster governments.

He said: “I was here during the boom in the oil industry. It was a very wealthy area. The place was buzzing, the school was buzzing. There wasn’t a spare bay, a classroom. spare class in the school…that, of course, changed and people had to leave town because the work was no longer there.”

David Hayes-Macleod is excited about the renewable energy opportunities at his school’s doorstep.

He continued: “However, now having renewables and having renewables and opportunity on our doorstep here at Cromarty Firth Port, [it] will open many opportunities for the children who are here, for their families. And I’m looking forward to it, I’m very happy to be the principal of a school, in a city, where you can see this renewable energy really take off.”
